Grantwriting Clinic - Duluth
Wednesday, May 28th, 1:00 - 4:00pm

Grantwriting endeavors too often drain an organization’s limited resources and end in frustration. Nonprofits that consistently get their grants funded know how to target their solicitations, write a compelling case for their program or organization, make a flawless professional presentation, and build relationships and networks with their current and potential supporters. In this workshop, participants will gain knowledge that will help them to better understand and implement a more strategic grantwriting and development process for their organizations. In this fast-paced, interactive clinic, participants will:

  • Explore their personal successes and challenges as a grant writer
  • Gain new perspective on the proposal development process
  • Clarify their understanding of the purpose of each section of a grant proposal
  • Have an opportunity to critique actual proposals submitted by clinic participants
  • Develop a better understanding of how to begin building a persuasive case

This workshop is designed for people who are already working in a development capacity in a nonprofit. It is appropriate for those who are new to development and those looking to refresh their skills and perspective. It is not appropriate for those who are looking to work in a nonprofit doing development at some point in their career. Clinic participants will receive a Handbook for Successful Grant Writing* that covers topics ranging from research and planning to a glossary of commonly used terms. This grantwriting clinic is designed by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and is led by Lori Anne Williams.

Lori-Anne Williams has twenty years of grant writing and nonprofit management experience. She teaches grantseeking for the University of St. Thomas and the Minnesota Council on Foundations. An independent contractor, her current clients include the Red Wing Area Fund, Jeremiah Program, Citizens League, the College of Design and the Center for Bioethics at the University of Minnesota.

* The Handbook is only available to participants and is not otherwise for sale.

The Nuts and Bolts of Fundraising: Building Your Nonprofit’s Individual and Major Donor Base - Grand Rapids, St. Paul, Mankato
June 10, 11, 12

The vast majority (85%) of charitable funds come from individual donors - not foundations or corporations. Learn how your organization can build a fundraising program that taps into the generosity of individual donors and honors your unique mission. In this dynamic, down-to-earth session you will have ongoing opportunities to practice what you learn as we explore:

• Why people give
• Where’s the money? (Philanthropy in America)
• Building a diverse funding base
• Identifying prospective donors
• “The ask” — face to face solicitation
• Alternative strategies, including house parties and “major gifts by mail”
• How to involve board members and other volunteers in fundraising
• And more!

Participants will work on, and then walk away with, concrete information, tools and handouts that you can use immediately as part of your organization’s fundraising plan. This workshop is for staff and volunteers of small- to mid-sized organizations wanting to take your individual and major gifts fundraising strategy (no matter where it’s at) to the next level.

Andy Robinson is the workshop presenter. For 27 years Andy Robinson has worked with a variety of nonprofits as a fundraiser, publicist, grantwriter, and community organizer. Since starting his consulting practice in 1995, Andy has provided support and training to thousands of nonprofit staff and volunteers in 45 U.S. states and in Canada.

USDA Housing Funds Available!

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Thanks to a colleague here at Extension, we were recently alerted to the availability of home repair and home purchase loans available through the US Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Program. After a bit of research, we’ve determined that ALL 9 Horizons communities are eligible. These loans are an excellent deal for home buyers in small communities, and the repair loan program can be a big help to current homeowners. There are different flyers for each region, so I’ll post them here according to the Horizons communities served:

Achieve Scholarship Program

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

The new Achieve Scholarship program is designed to address two critical barriers to college attendance: lack of academic preparation and financial access. High school graduates who complete any one of four sets of courses defined as rigorous earn a one-time scholarship of $1,200 to help pay for college at a public or private university or college. The Achieve scholarship, which was proposed by Governor Tim Pawlenty in January 2007 and signed into law in May, is available to students who graduate after January 1, 2008. To be eligible, a student must:

  • Have a parental adjusted gross income of less than $75,000 reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the academic year during which the scholarship is requested (this limit also applies to the adjusted gross income reported for independent students)
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Meet the definition of Minnesota resident used for state financial aid programs
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
  • Attend an eligible public or private postsecondary institution in Minnesota.
  • Apply for the scholarship no later than 30 days after the term starts
  • Successfully complete the first term of college enrollment in order to receive the second $600 installment of the Achieve Scholarship
  • Complete one of the four sets of rigorous programs of study while in high school or in a home-school setting described below

Regional Workshop in Fairmont today

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

We’re having a grand old time here at the Holiday Inn in Fairmont today — we have several Horizons participants attending from St. James, Mt. Lake, and Elmore.

I learned a lot in Monica’s session this morning on Nonprofits 101, including a little about the history of nonprofit organizations in the US.  I had no idea the first American nonprofit was the Humane Society!  Only after people started fighting for animal rights did they expand to work for children’s rights.

Other sessions were on Committees that Work, a great program from U of MN Extension, presented by Katie Rasmussen,

a session from the Youth Work Institute, and our very own Sara Radjenovic on Fundrasing.
